Call for Candidates & Referendum
by M. Alan Thomas II

As you are by now aware, Paul has chosen to resign his seat on the Board and has not reconsidered that position; thus, there is a vacancy on the Board. When I revised the Bylaws, I made it so that the Board can no longer appoint its own members. Therefore, this is a call for candidates for the Board. Applicants should notify myself and the current members of the board (Ted Skirvin and Mike Tresca) that they wish to stand for election. They might also wish to write a platform or other statement for publication in the Newsletter; send those to David Millians.

We already have one candidate: David Millians. Others are welcome and will give us a chance to actually have a meaningful vote of the membership.

In addition, the two remaining members of the Board, holding an absolute majority of the total number of seats, have unanimously elected Mike Tresca as their Chair. However, given the unusual situation, they have also voted to refer this action to the membership. This vote will happen simultaneously with the election of the new Board member or after the publication of the next Newsletter, whichever comes later. The ballot will be as follows:

(A) Approve of the election of Mike Tresca as Chair. Mike Tresca will remain Chair.
(B) Disapprove of the election of Mike Tresca as Chair. Mike Tresca will be cease to be Chair, and a new call for candidates for Chair shall be made to the Board.

Further voting instructions will be provided in the Newsletter immediately preceding the vote. Anyone wishing to act as an independent ballot-counter should let the Board and myself know.

Convention Report: Gen Con
By Louis Zocchi

GenCon was a raving success. On Thursday, the first day of the con, they had so many attenders that they ran out of Thursday badges, so they gave out Friday badges.  On Friday, they ran out of badges, so they gave out Saturday badges.  On Saturday, they had no Saturday badges left and no Sunday badges, so they gave our four-day badges until they ran out. Although they never announced on the public address system that they totally ran out of badges, I think they did. Total daily attendance was 60,000. About half the attenders were female, and about half the attenders were wearing costumes. D&D was the most popular game played.

Convention Report: Gen Con
By David Millians

I was able to visit Gen Con once again this year. The timing of the convention sometimes overlaps pre-planning or the start of the new year for my school, but this year was a recent exception, and future Gen Con dates also look good, so perhaps I’ll get back in the swing of things there.

This year my wife accompanied me. It was her first time at Gen Con, and her insights were interesting and valuable. Kim enjoyed the vibrant creativity visible everywhere, and she enjoyed meeting my friends, new and old, and how friendly and accepting and encouraging they all were of her. She also noticed the crowds, noise, and con food. We found some great restaurants in the area, mostly just outside the core convention neighborhood! We were able to play a session of RuneQuest Glorantha and try out new games of several kinds – cards, dice, and computer.

Families were everywhere in evidence at Gen Con. We estimated more than a third of the attendees we saw were women and girls. In his podcast with Robin Laws, Kenneth Hite refers to “gangs of 13 year-old girls,” much like those of 13 year-old boys seen in the past. We saw the same thing – young people, more costumes, more technology. Gen Con continues to be a very white convention, especially compared to the likes of Dragon Con in my hometown, but people of all sorts were braving the Pale Masses to attend as well, and that’s a good thing. Gaming demographics continue to shift, and Gen Con reflects these changes, though I think it is a few years behind the trends.

Gamergate-like harassment went on at Gen Con. It’s impossible for the organizers to catch every jerk that comes into the convention center, much less those at hotels and eateries all across central Indianapolis, but the results of this nasty behavior affects individuals, groups, companies, and the tenor of the “Four Best Days of Gaming.” Contessa, dedicated to making spaces for historically underprivileged people to run games and make our hobby more diverse and better, won’t take part in Gen Con for at least some years to come. Everyone coming to play should feel safe, or it’s not a convention for everyone. Marginalized people and groups in particular must be supported in their gaming interests. Where once nerds were bullied by many, we cannot allow modern members of the community to bully others.

CALENDAR

New listings this month were provided by Paul Cardwell and Lou Zocchi. Others are urged to submit information. If you attend a convention, be sure and check the conventions table and let us have a copy of the fliers (or at very least the when, what, where, and contact information) for upcoming conventions available there. CAR-PGa is international, so this includes anywhere in the world.

Dates, precise venue, contacts' URLs or phone numbers, and other information, where missing from this list, would be particularly appreciated.

"[LARP]" means only LARP events as many RPG cons include at least some LARP, as likewise applies to the mention of specific game systems. The same bracketed information applies as well to game systems when the con will have only those games present.

In an attempt to get more face-to-face meetings of the membership, we list who will be going to what convention, if they will tell us. Get this type of information in at least two months before the convention itself, so we can run it at least once. Support your local cons by helping in the staff. It is a good way to promote RPG and you generally get in free for the brief time spent helping.  Louis Zocchi will be exhibiting at Conapalooza in Kingsport, TN, on October 13-14.

A review of any attended convention afterwards for the Newsletter would be appreciated too. These reviews should include demographic data such as attendance, percentage male/female, white/ethnic minorities (or what- ever is the majority/white/others), games in addition to tabletop RPG, and more subjective matters such as unusual events, quality of games and dealers' room, encouragement of new gamers, and whatever seems worth reporting. We need to work to restore CAR-PGa's reputation as the media's go-to on gamer demographics, especially since the media are still citing a study that cut off all those over 35 - at a time when that was the median age of gamers - it is closer to 40 now - which indicates we also need to work on recruiting younger players, although some increase in college age players at conventions has been noted.
