Board Update & Voting to Confirm/Reject the Chair
by M. Alan Thomas II

No new candidates have come forward for the lone vacancy on the Board other than the one previously announced. Therefore, David Millians is elected to the Board by default. (Bylaws, Art. 7, § 3)

Having had a month and a Newsletter in which to debate the motion, the vote to confirm/reject the election of Mike Tresca as Chair—an action of the Board which the Board referred to the membership per the Bylaws (Art. 5, § 4)—will run for one month from the publication of this Newsletter. If you are, or think you might be, or will be after submitting material this month, an active member of CAR-PGa, please submit your vote from the following two choices to myself (M.Alan.Thomas.II@gmail.com), Mike Tresca (miketresca@gmail.com), Ted Skirvin (tedskirvin@yahoo.com), and the newly-elected David Millians (millians.david@paideiaschool.org). Sadly, we had no volunteers for outside vote-counters besides myself.

(A) Approve of the election of Mike Tresca as Chair. Mike Tresca will remain Chair.
(B) Disapprove of the election of Mike Tresca as Chair. Mike Tresca will be cease to be Chair, and a new call for candidates for Chair shall be made to the Board.

Finally, in case you have lost your copy, here is a link to the Bylaws: https://goo.gl/7uWF4V (Feel free to make your own digital or print copy for safekeeping.)

An Open Letter to CAR-PGa

Hello all,

I felt it was an appropriate time to thank Alan and Paul for their many years of service to CAR-PGa; they have provided leadership, guidance, and time to a most worthy cause - the demonstration of the tremendous merit of role-playing games. They have also worked to counter the negative and uninformed perspectives towards role-playing games offered by some individuals and organizations. In part, as a result of their efforts in CAR-PGa, the negative stigma of role-playing games has been gradually replaced by a positive perception.

I sincerely hope both Alan and Paul continue to make substantial contributions to CAR-PGa. We may be few in number, but we deliver a profound belief: that role-playing games can change the world for the better.

With regard to the to the By-law amendments, it seems to me that Alan's intention was to clarify the rules governing the association and diminish the possibility of arbitrary decisions made by the few who held the highest positions. I think this is commendable. I also understand Paul's reticence about changes going forward, as in an era of what has become, unfortunately, an era of divisiveness and “alternative facts,” we need to remain observant and question what's happening around us.

Going forward, I hope we can all commit to making more contributions to advancing role-playing games, whatever we happen to be doing. Personally, I feel that I have not done enough for CAR-PGa and have been too much of an observer and not enough of a contributor.

I have, however, been working on a language project which uses role-playing games to teach English as an additional language. It works well, as it addresses two critical needs: engagement (role-playing games are fun - who knew?) and practice. I know the association is well aware of how many other benefits RPGs offer.

I would also like to support David Millians as a candidate for the board. I've known David for a number of years and always found him to be receptive, inclusive and astute. As an educator, he experiences first-hand the impact of teaching through RPG's and understands how they can profoundly affect students' cognitive and social abilities.

Again, a big thank-you to Alan and Paul for their effort; I hope all of us can follow their example and continue to contribute to CAR-PGa's growth and success.

All the best,

Matthew Hayward

CONVENTIONS

New listings this month were provided by Paul Cardwell and Lou Zocchi. Others are urged to submit information. If you attend a convention, be sure and check the conventions table and let us have a copy of the fliers (or at very least the when, what, where, and contact information) for upcoming conventions available there. CAR-PGa is international, so this includes anywhere in the world.

Dates, precise venue, contacts' URLs or phone numbers, and other information, where missing from this list, would be particularly appreciated.

"[LARP]" means only LARP events as many RPG cons include at least some LARP, as likewise applies to the mention of specific game systems. The same bracketed information applies as well to game systems when the con will have only those games present.

In an attempt to get more face-to-face meetings of the membership, we list who will be going to what convention, if they will tell us. Get this type of information in at least two months before the convention itself, so we can run it at least once. Support your local cons by helping in the staff. It is a good way to promote RPG and you generally get in free for the brief time spent helping.

A review of any attended convention afterwards for the Newsletter would be appreciated too. These reviews should include demographic data such as attendance, percentage male/female, white/ethnic minorities (or what- ever is the majority/white/others), games in addition to tabletop RPG, and more subjective matters such as unusual events, quality of games and dealers' room, encouragement of new gamers, and whatever seems worth reporting. We need to work to restore CAR-PGa's reputation as the media's go-to on gamer demographics, especially since the media are still citing a study that cut off all those over 35 - at a time when that was the median age of gamers - it is closer to 40 now - which indicates we also need to work on recruiting younger players, although some increase in college age players at conventions has been noted.
