FROM THE CHAIR
Dear members,
First, a quick apology: I missed Ted Skirvin's vote on the points resolution in
January. It therefore passed by a vote of 2–0. Ted, like Bob Bledsaw II, has my
thanks for actually doing the lone job of a Board member.
Second, the vote on the
Bylaws amendment: I received two votes in February in favor of this,
counting my own, and none against. Others had expressed support during January
(prior to the actual voting period), but the measure passes regardless of
whether those are counted or not.
Therefore, the amendment is
adopted by a majority of the members voting on it.
Third, this is a formal call
for candidates for the new Board. Current members will
hold their seats until the process is complete. After elections are complete,
the new Board will elect a Chair from amongst their number. The new Chair will
then appoint Officers with the advice and consent of the Board.
The following members are
Active and therefore eligible to run for the Board. They should make an
announcement to the Board if they wish to do so; to ease the process, they can
email me at chair@car-pga.org and
I will distribute their declaration of candidacy to the Board.

This raises the odd question
of whether the Pajaks count as two members or one, given that I've only ever
heard from one (Kevin) and they're always listed together and earn points
together. This is important, as the dividing line between 12 and 13 active
members determines whether there are 3 or 5 seats on the Board. I am ruling for
now that they count as a single member unless they wish to contact me
separately and request and submit separate applications for membership, in the
same way that I wouldn't accept one of them sending in a proxy vote for another
that I've never heard from (if they ever voted).
I also doubt that we can get
5 eligible candidates for the new Board.
If the
Board or Membership wish to overrule me on this, they are welcome to do so at
any point during March. Barring that, as there are only 12 active members, the new
Board will have only 3 seats on it until the number of active members
increases. I will personally endorse Bob Bledsaw II and Ted Skirvin if they
wish to attempt to maintain their seats. I will not be running.
Sincerely,
M. Alan Thomas II

CALENDAR
New listings this month were provided by Paul Cardwell and Lou Zocchi.
Others are urged to submit information. If you attend a convention, be sure and
check the conventions table and let us have a copy of the fliers (or at very
least the when, what, where, and contact information) for upcoming conventions
available there. CAR-PGa is international, so this includes anywhere in the
world.
Dates, precise venue, contacts' URLs or phone numbers, and other
information, where missing from this list, would be particularly appreciated.
"[LARP]" means only LARP events as many RPG cons
include at least some LARP, as likewise applies to the mention of specific game
systems. The same bracketed information applies as well to game systems when
the con will have only those games present.
In an attempt to get more face-to-face meetings of the
membership, we list who will be going to what convention, if they will tell us.
Get this type of information in at least two months before the convention
itself, so we can run it at least once. Support your local cons by helping in
the staff. It is a good way to promote RPG and you generally get in free for
the brief time spent helping.
A review of any attended convention afterwards for the
Newsletter would be appreciated too. These reviews should include demographic
data such as attendance, percentage male/female, white/ethnic minorities (or
what- ever is the majority/white/others), games in addition to tabletop RPG,
and more subjective matters such as unusual events, quality of games and
dealers' room, encouragement of new gamers, and whatever seems worth reporting.
We need to work to restore CAR-PGa's reputation as the media's go-to on gamer
demographics, especially since the media are still citing a study that cut off
all those over 35 - at a time when that was the median age of gamers - it is closer
to 40 now - which indicates we also need to work on recruiting younger players,
although some increase in college age players at conventions has been noted.
