LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Hello All,

It's been a tumultuous month for tabletop role-playing games. We recently lost Rick Loomis, who founded Flying Buffalo. I outlined Flying Buffalo's enormous impact on the role-playing game industry in a three-part series that covered everything from play-by-mail to Tunnels & Trolls to solo gamebooks. Rick was one of the rare creators who was a constant presence in his company and the industry -- he was one of the founding members of the Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA).

Also debuting this month is a documentary that provides a controversial perspective on Dungeons & Dragons' legacy, Secrets of Blackmoor. It details how Dave Arneson was responsible for what some consider the "heart" of D&D, attempting to balance the credit for the game's development that is often attributed to Gary Gygax. Much of what is included isn't a surprise to anyone who knows their tabletop RPG history, but the documentary is particularly noteworthy for Rob Kuntz' involvement. Cecilia D'Anastasio covers the documentary in detail at Kotaku. She glosses over quite a bit -- for a detailed summary of what she missed, Alzrius on EN World provides an excellent series of footnotes.

As the hobby continues to mature (and become more lucrative) we will surely see more arguments over who should take credit for it all. But I believe the strength of the RPG community lies in our ability to band together to help someone in need.

While nothing can fill the hole left by Rick's passing, there is one way we can help. Before his death, Rick racked up significant medical bills. There is a GoFundMe page and a Bundle of Holding to help his family with the medical costs. I hope you’ll consider helping.

Sincerely,

Mike

Convention Report: Southern-Fried Gaming Expo 2019
By Ted Skirvin

SFGE took place July 12th through July 14th in the suburbs North of Atlanta. The event was originally focused on pinball machines and old style arcade games. In the last few years they have branched out into table top gaming.

The event always has a large room with pinball games and old electronic arcade games set on free play. They have a decent selection of discussion panels and special events. They have a large open area for board games and card games. They had a smaller, separate room for role-playing games. They had a "film festival," which was really just a video room. There were pinball and arcade tournaments. They had a room for crafting workshops, and they had a room for modern console gaming.

The RPG room only had D&D 5th edition scheduled. I did talk to the guy running the room, and he said he planned to have some other games available next year.

As for demographics, I estimate the male/female ratio was about 60/40. The racial makeup of attendees was about 75% white, 20% black, with the remainder being a mix of others.

CONVENTIONS

New listings this month were provided by Paul Cardwell and Lou Zocchi. Others are urged to submit information. If you attend a convention, be sure and check the conventions table and let us have a copy of the fliers (or at very least the when, what, where, and contact information) for upcoming conventions available there. CAR-PGa is international, so this includes anywhere in the world.

Dates, precise venue, contacts' URLs or phone numbers, and other information, where missing from this list, would be particularly appreciated.  If we have missed any, send the information to
plcardwell@gmail.com  Convention reviews should be sent to millians.david@paideiaschool.org

"[LARP]" means only LARP events as many RPG cons include at least some LARP, as likewise applies to the mention of specific game systems. The same bracketed information applies as well to game systems when the con will have only those games present.

In an attempt to get more face-to-face meetings of the membership, we list who will be going to what convention, if they will tell us.  Get this type of information in at least two months before the convention itself, so we can run it at least once.  Support your local cons by helping in the staff. It is a good way to promote RPG and you generally get in free for the brief time spent helping.

A review of any attended convention afterwards for the Newsletter would be appreciated too. These reviews should include demographic data such as attendance, percentage male/female, white/ethnic minorities (or whatever is the majority/white/others), games in addition to tabletop RPG, and more subjective matters such as unusual events, quality of games and dealers' room, encouragement of new gamers, and whatever seems worth reporting. We need to work to restore CAR-PGa's reputation as the media's go-to on gamer demographics, especially since the media are still citing a study that cut off all those over 35 - at a time when that was the median age of gamers - it is closer to 40 now - which indicates we also need to work on recruiting younger players, although some increase in college age players at conventions has been noted.
