LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Hi All,

My apologies for not writing a letter last month. I just started my new job, which kept me a lot busier than I expected. But before April completely passes us by, I wanted to share a few updates.

Let's start with a particularly tone-deaf April Fools Day hoax that mocked the possibility of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power tabletop role-playing game. The announcement was particularly poignant because She-Ra is seen as a LGBTQ symbol and the announcement was made on March 31, the International Transgender Day of Visibility. After I began gathering quotes from an article, the anonymous prankster blocked me on Twitter. Fortunately, the hoax garnered enough interest that some influential voices in the tabletop industry expressed the possibility of launch an official game. As if to return the favor, a tabletop role-playing game was central to the fourth episode of She-Ra's second season. You can read my full coverage of the hoax and how another license was treated similarly here.

Paul Cardwell pointed out that we have no means of onboarding new members in our group. I was able to remedy that with a Join Us form. I had to change the original form to reflect changes as a result of the General Data Protection Regulation, but I think it still captures quite a bit of information for new members. We've already gotten one new member as a result of this form, and I hope we can get more. Please spread the word by sharing this link.

EN World recently launched RPGNews.com, a real-time news aggregator for all things related to tabletop role-playing games. As an editor I'm happy to share CAR-PGA updates, which in turn propagates to a much wider audience on Facebook and Twitter.

When I find some time, I'd like to add a Best Practices section to our site, detailing vendor and convention policies that can be used by future RPG-related organizations. If you have some in mind, please share and we'll add it to that (soon to be created) page.

We've gotten renewed interest from a graduate student who would like to digitize our archives as part of his master’s program. We're hoping to have updates on this project in the near future!

Thanks so much for your support.

Sincerely,

Mike Tresca
Committee Chair

Television Review: True Detective
By Ted Skirvin

There is a TV series called True Detective. Each season has a different protagonist. For season three, the protagonist was investigating a missing brother and sister. In the first episode, they show the boy's room and they show a fictional D&D supplement called The Forests of Leng. If I'm not mistaken, it has the logo of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition on the cover. However, the disappearance takes place in 1980 which is before AD&D 2nd edition was published. The characters do mention a little about the kids playing the game in the woods. No character ever says "Dungeons & Dragons" in the show. A few shots show the typical dice set. After that first episode no games are mentioned and the show does not portray an RPG as being to blame.

Book Review: Chaotic Good by Whitney Gardner
By Ted Skirvin

This is a Young Adult book that I would guess was targeted at girls aged 13 to 15. It was published in 2018 by Alfred A. Knopf. The author bio indicates that she played D&D in her teens. As an adult, she worked as an art teacher and school librarian. Although she was originally from New York, she now lives in Canada.

The book is about a girl named Cameron Birch who she lives in Oregon. The Summer before her senior year of high school she moves from Portland to Eugene. Her family includes her parents and her twin brother. She is generally into geeky/fandom type things and is very seriously into cosplay. Her costumes won her the first prize at a convention's costume contest not long before the move to Eugene.

The tension of the story has to do with her interactions with some people she meets in Eugene and her efforts to work toward becoming a professional costume designer in the movie business. She has an unpleasant experience in a comic book store when the clerk treats her condescendingly because she is a girl. She then masquerades as a boy whenever she goes back there. But, she (and her brother) gets roped into a D&D game that meets at the store after hours. Various teenage hi-jinx ensue. Concerning her costuming career aspirations, she tries to get accepted into a summer program at an art school.

Overall, the book is an enjoyable read. In regard to the concerns of CAR-PGa, it certainly presents D&D in a very favorable light. Interestingly, there are little one-page "comic book" sections interspersed through the book that depict the actions of the D&D game she is playing.

CONVENTIONS

New listings this month were provided by Paul Cardwell and Lou Zocchi. Others are urged to submit information. If you attend a convention, be sure and check the conventions table and let us have a copy of the fliers (or at very least the when, what, where, and contact information) for upcoming conventions available there. CAR-PGa is international, so this includes anywhere in the world.

Dates, precise venue, contacts' URLs or phone numbers, and other information, where missing from this list, would be particularly appreciated.  If we have missed any, send the information to
plcardwell@gmail.com  Convention reviews should be sent to millians.david@paideiaschool.org

"[LARP]" means only LARP events as many RPG cons include at least some LARP, as likewise applies to the mention of specific game systems. The same bracketed information applies as well to game systems when the con will have only those games present.

In an attempt to get more face-to-face meetings of the membership, we list who will be going to what convention, if they will tell us.

·       Lou Zocchi will be at Tupelo Con on May 4-5.
·       David Millians will be at Gen Con on August 1-4.

Get this type of information in at least two months before the convention itself, so we can run it at least once. Support your local cons by helping in the staff. It is a good way to promote RPG and you generally get in free for the brief time spent helping.

A review of any attended convention afterwards for the Newsletter would be appreciated too. These reviews should include demographic data such as attendance, percentage male/female, white/ethnic minorities (or whatever is the majority/white/others), games in addition to tabletop RPG, and more subjective matters such as unusual events, quality of games and dealers' room, encouragement of new gamers, and whatever seems worth reporting. We need to work to restore CAR-PGa's reputation as the media's go-to on gamer demographics, especially since the media are still citing a study that cut off all those over 35 - at a time when that was the median age of gamers - it is closer to 40 now - which indicates we also need to work on recruiting younger players, although some increase in college age players at conventions has been noted.
