Comics as Pattern for Roleplaying-Games. Part 6:
Peters seltsame Reisen (Peter´s strange
Journeys). Adventures across all Genres
By Carsten Obst
Many
people in Germany think of comics as a relative new part of our national
culture. Often the opinion can be heard, that US-soldiers introduced them after
World War II. As a result, for a long time US-comics dominated the market in
the Federal Republic, rivaled only by products from France and Belgium like Asterix
or Lucky Luke. Foreign comics had a strong influence on the German comic
community, but domestic comic-production begun in the Federal Republic of
Germany during the Fifties. It was the Golden Age of German comics, when heroes
like Sigurd, a medieval knight, Akim, a Tarzan-like hero, or Nick, a future
astronaut, delighted their fans. Today original comics from this Golden Age are
sold and bought for high prices, if they are in a good condition. Reprints also
find interested customers, among them old fans, who read the originals decades
ago, as well as newcomers, who have discovered the beginnings of the German
comic-production in the Fifties.
One
of these reprints is Peters seltsame Reisen (“Peter´s strange Journeys”),
published as a hardcover volume in 2011 by the Eckart Schott Verlag. The
original series was released from 1957 to 1959 by the Walter Lehning Verlag,
one of the largest comic-publishers in Germany during the legendary
Wirtschaftswunder, or Economic Miracle of post-war Germany. The artist and
writer of Peters seltsame Reisen was Helmut Nickel, one of the best
German comic-artists of the Golden Age. He influenced strongly his colleagues
at the time.
Born
in 1924, Nickel was drafted to the Wehrmacht in World War II. The war ended for
him in a Belgian POW camp. Here Nickel practiced his artistic talents, until
the camp commander discovered his drawings. The commander´s father-in-law owned
a cinema, which needed an artist to produce movie posters, so Nickel got a new
duty outside the camp. After his repatriation, Nickel studied art history and
ethnology in West Berlin. To finance his studies, he worked part-time in an
advertising agency, where a colleague arranged a contact to the Gerstmayer
Verlag, a German comic-publisher. For this company, Nickel produced his first
comic, an adaption of Alexandre Dumas´ novel The Three Musketeers.
Using
the pseudonyms Hugh J. Haffspoke and H. Humbert, Nickel soon developed more
comics. Among them was Don Pedro, a historical series about the Spanish
conquest of Middle America in the 16th century, published by Junior Verlag. The
critical comments of its protagonist about the colonization caused reviewers to
see it not just as Nickel´s best comic but also as the best of the German
Golden Age. Here he used his knowledge as an ethnologist to introduce the
readers to the pre-colonization cultures of Middle America.
For
the Gerstmayer Verlag Nickel produced Titanus, the first German
SF-comic. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after five issues. Other series were Robinson,
based on Daniel Defoe´s novel, and Francis Drake about the famous
British seafarer, both for the Walter Lehning Verlag. In Robinson, the
hero was a world traveler visiting exotic places, while Francis Drake
gave many young readers first impressions of the swashbuckling genre. For the
Walter Lehning Verlag, Nickel also produced Peter´s seltsame Reisen.
When
Nickel finished his studies in 1959 with a Ph.D., he begun to work for a museum
in West Berlin. Here he lacked the necessary time to produce comics, but soon
he got a position as curator for the weapons collections at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York City, a dream come true. The new job was less
time-consuming, and so Nickel worked again for the Walter Lehning Verlag. Now
he created Winnetou, a comic based on the famous novels of the German
author Karl May about Winnetou, the noble chieftain of the Apaches.
Unfortunately, a 1964 legal disputes with Walter Lehning put an end to Nickel´s
career in the comic industry. Lehning, a dashing but chaotic publisher, had not
paid royalties for months.
As
a result, Nickel concentrated on his work as a curator at the Metropolitan
Museum, until he retired in 1989. Afterwards he moved to Florida, where he is
still living. In 2011 his lifetime achievement for the German comic community
was honored at the Comicfestival München , a comics convention in Munich, with
the prestigious “Peng! - Der Münchner Comicpreis” (“Paw! - The Comic-Prize of
Munich”).
Also
in 2011, the Eckart Schott Verlag published a reprint of Peters seltsame
Reisen. The original drawings do no longer exist, and so the publishers
used old issues and later reprints as patterns. With the assistance of
collectors, they compiled the complete series. All colors were reworked,
because the original coloration no longer matched modern standards. A special
problem was the end of the series, because in the original issue the Walter
Lehning Verlag replaced the last panel with a text. Nickel returned from his
retirement to work as a comic artist for a last time: he drew the missing
picture again.
At
the beginning of the book, three chapters present the comic´s background. In
“Eine Odyssee durch Raum und Zeit” (“An Odyssey through Space and Time”),
Detlef Lorenz explains its history and copyright problems. The first storylines
included crossovers with the comics Akim and Nick der Weltraumfahrer
(Nick the Spacefarer), both from Hansrudi Wäscher. When Wäscher, who worked
also for the Walter Lehning Verlag, he protested that Nickel used characters
from legends or literature to prevent legal problems.
In
“Der lange Marsch zu dieser Ausgabe” (“The long March to this Edition”), the
second chapter, Gerhard Schlegel describes the complicated publishing of the
hardcover reprint. Some of these difficulties were already mentioned. Badly
printed issues, different colorizations of the original series, and the complex
digitalization caused more problems. Nevertheless, they were solved, and so the
long march ended with a victory.
With
“Der Ur-Peter” (“The previous Peter”), the third chapter, Gerhard Förster describes
Peter´s origins. He was based on a boy with this name, the son of a friend.
When Nickel learned that the real Peter admired his comic Die drei
Musketiere, he made him the hero of the new series. He also used a teenaged
version of the boy as a mascot for Hit Kid, a music magazine published
in 1956. By the way, as an adult, the real Peter became a manager for Marriott International,
a hotel company.
Peter,
the hero of the comic, lives during the late Fifties in a West German town,
where his family owns a house. At home, he mostly interacts with his mother, a
classic housewife, and his big sister Heidi. She is the prototype of a teenaged
girl in that time, including a temperament switching constantly between
ladylike and pertly.
The
adventures begin at a pet shop, where Zig is to be sold. Zig is the
monkey-sidekick of Akim, the hero of the series Akim. With Peter´s help
Zig escapes. Soon they meet Akim himself, who came with his second sidekick,
the gorilla Kar, to free the monkey. Peter joins them on their way back to
Africa. Here they encounter a safari, organized by two white hunters, but in
fact, they are gangsters, who want to learn from Akim the location of a diamond
mine. For this, they take his girlfriend Rita as a hostage. With the help of
Wum, the overweight, but nice king of a friendly tribe, Akim and Peter free her
in a dashing way.
The
second crossover begins when Nick lands in the jungle, the hero from the
SF-comic Nick der Weltraumfahrer. He invites Peter to a space tour, but
a problem during the FTL-flight causes a landing in ancient Rome. Here they
meet Julius Caesar, encounter distrustful legionnaires, and find themselves in
the arena. Escaping with Nick´s remote-controlled spaceship they travel to the
Venus, where they rescue a Venusian girl from a dinosaur. Her people, the
Kalaumes, are enslaved by the Hu-Las, the inhabitants of Saturn. In the best
space-opera-tradition, our heroes help the Kalumes to overthrow their
oppressors. Afterwards Nick brings Peter back home via a time warp, just in
time for supper.
As
a result of Wäscher´s intervention, Nickel used Dumas´ The Three Musketeers
for the next adventure. Athos, Portos, and Aramis are pursued by the cardinal´s
guards but escape with Peter´s help. Together they hurry to Castle Roquefort,
which was captured by Richelieu´s soldiers. While the musketeers free the
imprisoned count, the cardinal´s guards kidnap his daughter. Peter chases them,
freeing the young lady with tricks learned from comics (Where else?). While the
musketeers start off to Paris, he returns home with the help of Baron Münchhausen.
Riding on a cannonball (What else?), Peter lands exactly in his room, where
poor Heidi mistakes the missile for a ball and kicks it - “Ouch!”
Next
morning at the river, Peter meets Sinbad the Sailor, whom he joins on an
expedition. After encountering a giant fish and freeing a princess from an evil
magician, a Roc attacks the ship. Peter falls overboard but swims ashore,
arriving in the Wild West. Here Goldpfeil (Golden Arrow), a brave and noble chieftain,
saves him from bloodthirsty American Indians. Together they fight against
bandits, who attack Goldpfeil´s camp and kidnap his squaw Blaue Blume (Blue Flower),
so our heroes must rescue her. Afterwards Peter joins Phileas Fogg, who is
traveling around the world in eighty days. An accident leaves him on the island
of Robinson Crusoe, where Captain Flint has just hidden his treasure. The
pirates discover Peter and Robinson, but Captain Nemo, who pursued the pirate
ship with his ship “Nautilus,” helps them. Nemo brings Peter back home, where
our youthful hero arrives in time for supper.
One
day later Peter must write a report about the crusades for school, but when he
meets Don Quixote, he supports the knight´s quest to free a kidnapped princess.
A man-eating giant and a dragon must be defeated to do that. The king knights
Peter for his bravery, before Turkish pirates capture him. He arrives at an
oriental city attacked by the crusaders. Peter opens the city gate for Richard
Lionheart´s army, but when he warns the king that Duke Leopold of Austria will
take him prisoner, he is accused of being a wizard. A failure of the torturer´s
equipment allows him to escape. Hiding in a cave, Peter encounters Aladdin, the
owner of the magic lamp. Together they defeat the forty thieves. As a reward,
Aladdin orders the genie from the lamp to bring Peter home - and to write the
report for school.
In
his next adventure Peter encounters Sherlock Holmes, who searches for Black Molly,
the lady-boss of a smuggler gang. Together they pursue her to a night-club,
where a shoot-out begins. Black Molly escapes via airplane to Africa, but Peter
hides in her suitcase. In the jungle he meets Tarzan, who is just interested in
his next movie. Only when the production is threatened, he brings Black Molly
and her gang to justice. Afterwards Peter joins the Argonauts, among them
Hercules and Odysseus. On the way, they watch Daedalus and Icarus fleeing from
Crete, are attacked by amazons, must overcome a cyclops, fight against a hydra,
encounter man-eating centaurs, and face a griffin. With Hercules´ strength,
Odysseus´ cleverness, and Peter´s ideas they pass these challenges. A Pegasus
brings our hero home, where the mythical being mistakes Heidi´s long pony-tail
for that of a real horse.
In
the last adventure, Peter´s big sister Heidi becomes a protagonist too. She is
making fun of a book Peter is reading, when suddenly Sir Tristan from King
Arthur´s Round Table appears. He is searching for Prince Valliant, from whom he
was separated while fighting against giants. Of course, Peter joins him - and
the romantic Heidi, too. After fighting against a dragon, they hurry to free
three princesses, who were enchanted. Overcoming a giant, saving a key from the
bottom of a well, and battling an evil magician are parts of the quest.
Unfortunately, the freed princesses turn out to be real silly things, arguing
with each other. Peter, Heidi and Sir Tristan ride on, perhaps back home - or
to new adventures?
Peter´s
seltsame Reisen
is an interesting masterpiece of the German comic-industry during its Golden
Age. For this reason, it can be described as a real must for collectors with an
interest in comics of the Fifties, especially for those from Helmut Nickel and for
everyone who wants to research seriously the history of this art form. The exemplary
format of this hardcover volume makes it also a model for reprints, setting a
high standard for the publishers. Today comics are no longer the traditional
booklets, often printed on cheap paper, but must show a high level of quality
to get the interest of the readers.
Nickel´s
comic can also be used as a setting for RPGs, especially for systems which
combine different genres as background. Obviously, the world in which Peter
lives is a cross point, where the past, the present, and the future, reality
and fantasy, as well as magic and futuristic technology flow together. Here
heroes from history, legends, myths, literature, movies, and comics can appear
at any time, interacting with each other but also with the normal people.
Genres like swashbuckling, fantasy, adventure, science fiction, piracy, or
steampunk exist in this world at the same time and at the same place.
For
the GM, this setting is a special but valuable challenge. It should be decided
how this combination of genres, reality, and fantasy works. If the PCs are
children, then the Tooniversal Tour Guide, published by Steve Jackson
Games, offers a good background. In the chapter “Toony Tyke Adventures” the
“Kidworld” is introduced, the imaginary world of kids. Here the ability Wild
Imagination enables the young PCs to change a bedroom into a submarine or the
backyard into a jungle. Perhaps Peter´s adventures are part of his imagination,
but how did Heidi join him in the last adventure? Did she rediscover her own
“Wild Imagination”, which she forgot when she became a teen?
Another
possibility can be found in the GURPS sourcebook IOU: Welcome to Illuminati
University about an unusual university located at an interdimensional
nexus. As a result, you meet there everyone from everywhere and from every time
and every dimension. This corresponds to the world, where Peter lives. If the
GM uses this option, the combined genres, reality and fantasy, would also be
the result of an interdimensional nexus. As a result, the borders between the
dimensions are flowing, allowing at least some people to travel from one world
to the next. Peter and his sister Heidi are among those gifted but also heroes
like Akim or Nick. That other people do not realize the flowing borders between
the dimensions or react with equanimity may be a result of the advantage
Mundanity and the disadvantage Mundane Background, which are also described in
this sourcebook.
Of
course, the GM can find an own explanation for the versatile background of
Nickel´s comic, but whatever is chosen, fun, suspense, and adventure shall be
in the foreground. The PCs may be children like Peter or teens like Heidi, but
adult characters are also possible. Even an existing RPG-group can be sent to
this world, regardless of the genre where they usually have adventures. Surely
this would be a great surprise for them. Imagine a group of PCs from the “Star
Trek” RPG, who suddenly encounter Athos, Porthos, and Aramis in ancient Rome,
where Sherlock Holmes dines with Sinbad the sailor….
Altogether,
Peters seltsame Abenteuer is of great interest for comic collectors and researchers,
as well as a setting for RPGs. If you want to complete your collection of
comics or if you are looking for an unusual but versatile background, you
should try Nickel´s work.

CONVENTIONS
New
listings this month were provided by Paul Cardwell and Lou Zocchi. Others are
urged to submit information. If you attend a convention, be sure and check the
conventions table and let us have a copy of the fliers (or at very least the
when, what, where, and contact information) for upcoming conventions available
there. CAR-PGa is international, so this includes anywhere in the world.
Dates,
precise venue, contacts' URLs or phone numbers, and other information, where
missing from this list, would be particularly appreciated.
"[LARP]"
means only LARP events as many RPG cons include at least some LARP, as likewise
applies to the mention of specific game systems. The same bracketed information
applies as well to game systems when the con will have only those games
present.
In
an attempt to get more face-to-face meetings of the membership, we list who
will be going to what convention, if they will tell us. Get this type of
information in at least two months before the convention itself, so we can run
it at least once. Support your local cons by helping in the staff. It is a good
way to promote RPG and you generally get in free for the brief time spent
helping.
A
review of any attended convention afterwards for the Newsletter would be
appreciated too. These reviews should include demographic data such as
attendance, percentage male/female, white/ethnic minorities (or what- ever is
the majority/white/others), games in addition to tabletop RPG, and more
subjective matters such as unusual events, quality of games and dealers' room,
encouragement of new gamers, and whatever seems worth reporting. We need to
work to restore CAR-PGa's reputation as the media's go-to on gamer
demographics, especially since the media are still citing a study that cut off
all those over 35 - at a time when that was the median age of gamers - it is
closer to 40 now - which indicates we also need to work on recruiting younger
players, although some increase in college age players at conventions has been
noted.
